How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.
Annie Dillard
The equivalent of more than 20 million people’s lives are wasted watching Netflix. We spend two hours per day watching TV according to a recently updated time use survey. This hides a lot of person-to-person variability, with some not watching TV at all and others spending a much bigger portion of their day doing so. There is also a lot of variability in how much time we spend eating and drinking. In Mediterranean countries, people spend on average two hours per day on food, while in Canada and the US it’s closer to one hour. The biggest country-to-country variability, and likely also the biggest person-to-person variability, is in the amount of time we spend working. Interestingly, and perhaps contrary to the way things feel, the average amount of time we spend at work keeps decreasing.
