Stigma

Common sense dictates that there’s an optimum level of introspection, and it’s possible that many of us do too much soul-searching.

A related idea is that increasing awareness of mental health struggles may be counterproductive. This hypothesis is further explored in this article:

We propose that awareness efforts are leading some individuals to interpret and report milder forms of distress as mental health problems. We propose that this then leads some individuals to experience a genuine increase in symptoms, because labelling distress as a mental health problem can affect an individual’s self-concept and behaviour in a way that is ultimately self-fulfilling.

The authors don’t offer new empirical evidence for this hypothesis but suggest ways to test it. Here’s a blog post that discusses the implications.
