Colossal squids are probably the world’s largest invertebrates and we know next to nothing about them. We have only ever caught about a dozen complete specimen, although the beaks of several more have been found in sperm whale stomachs, indicating that the two species fight. There is no image or video of them going about their business.
Giant squid are similar in size to colossal squid, but they weigh less. They are less shy, or maybe more common, since more have been caught. There’s even footage of one in its habitat.
How is it that we share the planet with an animal such as the colossal squid and make so little effort to find out more?
