Playing the Harmonica

A few years ago, I decided to learn how to play the harmonica. I started by watching a few YouTube videos, buying a $20 harp, and trying to play Happy Birthday. Years later, and after hundreds of hours of practice, I’m still not good at it. I’m not even passable, and I wouldn’t inflict my playing on anyone. I mostly play when I’m by myself, and I have a collection of 20 melodies that I keep returning to, including Greensleeves and Amazing Grace. During Christmas time, I play Fairytale of New York and Silent Night. What do I like about the harmonica? It’s small, it’s cheap, it’s easy to learn, and I don’t need to know musical notation. Instead, harmonica tabs are just rows of numbers that tell you which hole you need to blow into. People who play serious instruments look down on the harmonica, and they’d pay good money not to hear me play. That’s okay, I’m not doing it for them.
