Decimal Time

For anyone like me who is familiar with both inches and centimeters, it’s obvious that the metric system is superior. I have done anything from large DIY projects and cooking using both systems. As a scientist, I also think about how to measure things a lot professionally. The metric system wins hands down. The argument that the pounds, feet and Fahrenheit are more natural units makes sense until you compare their ease of use to kilograms, meters and Celsius and realize that it’s the other way round.

The one dimension that has escaped the metric system is time. The International System of Units defines the second as the unit of time, but we still use minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years. Nobody uses kiloseconds. Decimal time would make more sense and was tried after the French Revolution. It didn’t take, and now it’s too late to start over.
