I’ve recently speculated about how it may be possible to use AI to monitor the news and to alert me only when anything noteworthy happens. The advantage would be that there’d be no need to check the news, since I know that I get an alert if something actually important happens.
Even more recently, I prompted ChatGPT o3 to do exactly that:
Every six hours, check the news for events that are likely among the 20 most important this year. If such an event occurs, notify me with a message with 20 words or less describing the event. Do not include graphs or figures. If nothing that qualifies occurs, remain silent. This means that most days, I don’t hear from you. Don’t notify me about the same event more than once. On average, don’t notify me more often than once a week.
Unfortunately, despite trying different variations of this prompt, I have not succeeded to get o3 to behave the way I want. I receive notifications every six hours, and most of the time they’re clearly not high-impact events. For example:
April 29, 2025
Ray Dalio warns global order near collapse amid Trump tariffs, escalating trade tensions.
For now, there appears to be no way to get o3 to run regular searches but remain fully silent most of the time unless it finds something that matches the criteria.
