Life and Art, Richard Russo‘s newest book, is a collection of his essays. It came out only a few days ago, and since I like his novels, I picked it up. Some of the essays, including Meaning and Miracles, are gems. Others are fine but I won’t read them again since they deal with the literary world and the preoccupations of those who inhabit it. I like to read, but I don’t want to read about how the literary sausage is made. There are also some essays that I wish I hadn’t spent time on, including one that seemed to be a transcript of one of Russo’s college lectures.
