The city of Santa Fe mandates that downtown buildings adhere to a specific style, Pueblo Revival. I’m in favor of making it easier to build and removing arbitrary restrictions. Yet even though I’m a YIMBY, I wonder if style mandates wouldn’t improve cities’ attractiveness. The mandated styles could be historical (“Belle Epoque“) or made up from scratch by a designer or an architect. The result would be places that are truly unique, counteracting the sameness pervading modern construction.
