What matters more, what you eat, or the quality of that food? What’s healthier, low-grade boiled GMO vegetables from Food ‘n’ Stuff or a bag pf premium organic chips from Wholefoods? In case you’re now grumbling that this is a false dichotomy and that of course your food should be both healthy and high quality, I’d like to point out that many of us don’t have a lot of money. Organic food is more expensive than the type grown with nitrogen fertilizers and pesticides, and it’s far from obvious that spending extra for organic food is worth it. On the contrary, there is plenty of evidence that it doesn’t matter.
For some groceries, quality does impact flavor. Take fruit for example: Apples are highly variable in terms of flavor, and freshness and ripeness are big factors.
When I’m out grocery shopping for my family, I always buy the other kind if there’s a choice so I save a few bucks. I don’t mind GMOs either. There is however a lot of evidence that seeking out fruits, vegetables and legumes and avoiding red meat and processed carbohydrates is a good idea, whether they’re organic or not.
