People Are Better Than Dogs

Two days ago, I was in my neighborhood bar run by the American Legion. There was live music and general good cheer. People like to bring their dogs. One corgi with protruding eyes accurately assessed me as a soft target for throwing his tennis ball so he could run after it. There were some larger dogs too, and later that evening they suddenly, without any warning started to fight viciously. It was over before any of the patrons had realized what was going on. The large dog trotted off, and left behind on the ground was the corgi, his ears shredded and bloodied.

That’s fairly typical. Having grown up with dogs, and loving dogs, I also know that if dogs had the ability to build nukes, they’d nuke each other.

As I’m writing this, I’m watching a dozen five-year-olds climb a small inflatable water slide in a California backyard. It’s one of those kids’ birthday parties that I spend many of my weekends at. The boys and girls I’m watching are all having a great time, waiting their turn and squealing in delight as they slide down.

Unlike the dogs, the kids hardly ever physically fight. For the most part, they just get along. It’s one of these superpowers we humans have: We are great at being around others.
