Despite all the research done on management best practices, all the articles and reports and books that have been written, despite all the experience accumulated by consulting firms and other organizations, it’s not clear if the quality of corporate management is higher now than it was fifty years ago. For governmental management, it may be lower.

That admiral Hyman Rickover was one of the most capable administrators the United States has ever seen isn’t controversial. Here is something I’ve written about Rickover previously. His views on management are still worth considering today, as Charles Yang writes in Asterisk magazine. I also believe that they offer an answer as to why the quality of management has not improved much: It’s not the management system that matters most, it’s the people.
