Jane Austen Wrecked My Life

I had seen posters advertising the movie Jane Austen Wrecked My Life earlier this year while traveling in Europe. The name was funny enough that I remembered it when I saw that it was available as an in-flight movie on a plane home from yet another conference last week.

Jane Austen Wrecked My Life is an unmistakably French romantic comedy, and that’s not only because most of the movie is in French. There is more nudity than in American romantic comedies. There is more discussion of literature, but not so much as to distract from the movie. There is smoking. And as is obvious from the trailer, the movie unashamed plays with national cliches.

The protagonist has two love interests, one French and one English. The French love interest is portrayed by Pablo Pauly, an actor so charmingly gallic that I felt compelled to look him up. The English love interest is painfully English and drives an MGB Roadster (I mean, come on!).

I have never read anything by Jane Austen, I have no desire to watch Bridgerton, yet I enjoyed this one.
