For hundreds of years after the pyramids of Giza had been completed, mammoths still roamed Wrangel Island off the northern coast of Siberia. Around the time the last ones died, the palace of Minos in Crete was being built. The cause of the extinction of the Wrangel Island mammoths is unknown but was probably not inbreeding, as has been assumed for a long time.
