Pharma Ads

My wive and I had dinner at a noisy hot pot restaurant on Geary Boulevard. The restaurant was packed. When my wive went to get some more sesame sauce, I abstract-mindedly watched the TV on the opposite wall. It showed a pharma ad for a drug called Bimzelx. A lady in shorts and with a huge grin riding a scooter.

When my wive returned with her sauce, I said: “This pharma ad was on and they showed the drug target. I think that’s the first time I’ve seen this.”

By now you probably think, “that guy is terrible at making dinner conversation.” Does telling you that both my wive and I work in pharma-related fields make this a little less cringe?

“Yeah, that seems unlikely,” said my wive and dipped some boiled lamb into the sauce.

Encouraged, I continued. “IL-17A, apparently.” It was a drug target I had worked on myself, years ago.

My wive frowned her adorable frown. “Come on. They wouldn’t state the aisle in a pharma ad. Actually, I doubt they even would say that they sell it at Target.”

It took us both some time to fully sort out the misunderstanding.

The moral of the story? Pharma ads don’t just make for bad dinner conversation, but also for only moderately amusing blog posts.
