Two Very Good Movies

A Man Called Otto: This is an example of a genre I enjoy. The genre is Grumpy old man with new neighbors. Other examples of GOMWNN are St Vincent (starring Bill Murray as GOM) and Gran Torino (GOM: Clint Eastwood). The story is that a grumpy man has lost his wife recently and doesn’t want anything to do with the world any more, but then a new family moves in next door. They’re annoying the GOM initially, but after many misunderstandings the GOM opens up and eventually does something to help the neighbors and redeem himself.

American Fiction: This is a 2023 movie based on Percival Everett’s 2001 novel Erasure, which in turn was, I assume, inspired by the Sokal hoax. A struggling writer sends a manuscript that he believes to be an obvious satire to publishers, but they take it seriously and so does everyone else, with the book becoming a bestseller. I watched the movie on a plane and since I didn’t want to alarm my fellow passengers I had to pull myself together not to laugh out loud or get moist eyes.

La coeur a ses raisons que la raison ne connaît point
