So Delicious You’ll Go to Jail: Poppy seed cake

I’ve spent the first 18 years of my life in Austria. Something that I still miss is the food, which is hard to get even in an otherwise culinarily rich place such as the San Francisco Bay area, where I now live. Consider poppy seed cake for example. It’s almost impossible to find, and when I do, it’s unrecognizably different. I miss it.

I know I’m not to only one. From an acquaintance I heard that his uncle, who had moved to Colombia, also missed poppy seed cake. His sister, i.e. my acquaintance’s mother, kindly sent him a pack of poppy seeds by international mail so that he could make his own cake. Two weeks later, Colombia’s drug enforcement agency kicked in his front door, pushed him to the ground and dragged him off to jail. There, he got roughly interrogated for a few days. The questions also centered around why anyone would attempt to import drugs to Colombia.
