A Reason to Relax about the Population Collapse: Historically, lower fertility has led to higher economic growth

Birth rates are declining, and we don’t know if that’s good or bad. At least not with enough certainty to warrant any policy interventions or to make any trade-offs with women’s freedom to have as many or as few kids as they want.

A paper by economists including Nobel prize winner Daron Acemoglu suggest that historically, declining fertility has led to higher per capita economic growth. It’d be nice if this also held for the current fertility decline, and while plausible, for now it’s unclear if it will.
