Hiroshima and Nagasaki are 300 kilometers apart and are located on different islands. Tsutomu Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima when the nuclear bomb was dropped there on August 6, 1945. He survived but suffered burns. He then took a train to Nagasaki, arriving in time for the second bomb on August 9. He survived this one as well and he is the only known person to have witnessed both nuclear blasts from the ground. Jacob Beser is the only person to have witnessed both bombs from the air as a member of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki strike crews.
