Here is a list of fruit, from least to most risky:
- Bananas. Apart from not being ripe, or being too ripe, all bananas taste the same. Nobody ever says “That was a good banana.”
- Pineapples: Del Monte seems to have a near-monopoly in the US, and they’re good at delivering consistent quality.
- Cantaloupes. Remarkably consistent, although there are some that disagree and are willing to pay for it.
- Grapes: Consistent within the same variety.
- Watermelon: Seedless watermelons are higher risk than seeded ones.
- Pomegranates: Unlike other fruit, large pomegranates tend to taste better.
- Apples. Apples are tricky, because their variance differs between different varieties. Granny Smith are low variance.
- Plums: Similar to watermelons.
- Apricots. Mostly bad, but sometimes incredible.
- Peaches. The riskiest of all fruit. Peach quality doesn’t just differ between batches, but also between years. 2026 hasn’t been a good peach year.
