Last week, the OECD released its most recent PISA report on the performance of 15-year-old students in mathematics, science and reading. Across all three domains, and across the world, students’ performance has decreased drastically since 2022. 2022 was itself a low point compared to previous years. The decline is seen both for countries that are below and above average.
The decline is global, started before COVID-19 forced school lockdowns, and before the widespread use of AI. What’s going on? The report itself links the declining scores to shorter attention spans, digital distraction and AI use, but stops short of saying those are causal.
