It’s nice to be mindful and aware and pay attention and all that, but “mindfulness” and “awareness” are cringeworthy words that I don’t like to use even though I don’t have better substitutes. Is it even possible to talk about these things without sounding like a therapist? This sort of talk has the same deficits than management speak. It’s boring, it’s alienating, and it tries to sound more authoritative than it really is. Maybe the way around it is to say what I noticed, rather than talking about the noticing itself, to make it less abstract.
I think this ability to take about what’s important without using therapy or wellness language is why I like Ian Bogost’s work.
